Capricorn Season 2022: Celebrate or Strategize?
Time to Celebrate!
Since studying Astrology, I have found it interesting to connect the dots with how our ancestors infused astrological energy with everyday life. For example, in ancient astrology, before telescopes, astrologers used a seven-planet system (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn). Those planets were assigned to specific days: the Moon’s day was Monday, Mars’ day was Tuesday (or Martis in Roman), Mercury's day was Wednesday (or Mercurii in Roman), etc., etc. But what about Saturday? Saturn’s day? How can the planet of structure, hard work, and grounded practicality rule the day we let loose? And better yet, if Saturn rules Capricorn, how come most of the world blows off steam during Saturn’s time of the year–Capricorn season?
Look in any astrology book and under the Capricorn section, you’ll find that they value doing a great job, need solitude, and are utterly realistic. You would then think that this is a time to hunker down and get to work. There is some truth to that, but why then, do most of the world choose to celebrate? There’s Christmas, Hanukka, Kwanza, and New Year’s Eve, to name a few. Well, to gain some clarity about the festivity nature of Capricorn season, we can turn to the Roman holiday, Saturnalia.
To honor the agricultural God Saturn and to celebrate Winter Solstice, the Romans threw the festival Saturnalia. It was said that for a handful of days, people gorged themselves on food and drinks, public gambling was accepted, and gifts were exchanged. It was a carnival atmosphere and hedonism ran wild. Cato the Elder, a Roman poet and philosopher said of the festival, “Rampant overeating and drunkenness became the rule, and a sober person the exception.” So then, how come this self-indulgent, pleasure-satisfying holiday honor the God of structure and rules?
If we explore the Roman mythology of Saturn for a bit, we can then understand the reasoning behind Saturnalia. Roman poet, Virgil, had this to say about Saturn, “[H]e gathered together the unruly race [of fauns and nymphs] scattered over mountain heights and gave them laws... Under his reign were the golden ages men tell of: in such perfect peace he ruled the nations.” If you take a look at the image below, you can see that fauns are half-human and half-fauns. The God Saturn gave these creatures law and order to create peace on Earth. Now that sounds more like Saturn!
What are humans? Aren’t we animals? We could say humans are half soul, half animal. For the most part, we’ve been able to remain civilized, but there’s still that monkey in us. The most horrendous part of our animal nature is how we still go to war with one another. We can only do our part, by working on enhancing our consciousness we can help others raise there’s too, and collectively, we can create peace on Earth.
There’s that monkey nature in us, and don’t you agree that if we don’t carve out some time to let the inner animal within us free, that wild nature will find its way out? A good example of this is Sigmund Freud's take on depression. He said that depression is anger internalized. And the nature of anger is to want to hurt or even kill. I don’t want to make light of clinical depression, but one anti-depressant strategy is to release all that pent-up energy. Scream, exercise, vent, expend energy. What has the collective remembered about Saturn-ruled Capricorn season that astrologers haven’t?
This is an astrological conundrum that I’ve been trying to answer. Why do we have fun on Saturdays and in December? It wasn’t until Steven Forrest (a Capricorn himself) connected the dots for me about the shared value of practicality and realism that Saturn and Capricorn hold and the animal nature of humans, that the holidays and Saturdays made sense—the ancients were on to something!
It’s realistic to honor the inner animal within all of us. If we don’t designate a time and space to let ourselves raise a little bit of hell, then that energy is going to come out unconsciously. It’s unrealistic to transcend the half-animal within us, the half-faun within us. We can now recognize that what’s fundamentally healthy for the human psyche is to honor our animal appetites in healthy doses. To help release some tension, we need to indulge in some fun. To help create some balance, we need to celebrate being alive.
During Capricorn season, make sure you create your own version of Saturnalia. This is the time and space for it. Saturn will thank you for it!
Time to Strategize!
Now that we have an understanding of the festive nature of this season, let’s get down to business. On Wednesday, Dec 21, 2022, the Sun moves into Capricorn, aka the Winter Solstice. Whenever you decide to satisfy that animal hunger, make sure you also take advantage of the strategical, ambitious, and practical energy in the air. The Sea-Goat (Capricorn’s symbol), can climb the highest peaks and swim the deepest seas.
New Moon in Capricorn
Having three planets in Capricorn in the fifth house myself, I do enjoy playtime, but I have to earn it. With that sentiment, you might want to take advantage of the New Moon occurring on Dec. 23rd at 2:17 am PST because Mercury will begin its infamous backward motion from Dec. 29th, 2022 - Jan. 18th, 2023. We’re going to be starting the new year with Mercury retrograde. Therefore, use the New Moon to set your intentions for 2023 instead of NYE or new year’s day. Furthermore, this New Moon is a potent one because it’s happening on the first degree of Capricorn.
Themes to manifest:
Strategies
Building things that will last
Getting paid to be yourself
Success
Achievements
Work
Maturing
Responsibility
Planning

Jupiter in Aries
The planet of faith and expansion is moving into the sign of courage and boldness, Aries, for the second time, from Dec. 20th, 2022- May 16th. 2023. It just so happens that on the day of the New Moon, Jupiter will be squaring the Sun and the Moon. Whatever you choose to manifest, know that you have luck on your side because Jupiter is asking you to believe in yourself. You need a victory, and Jupiter in Aries is asking you to really go after it!
Capricorn, The Strategist, and The Hermit
Strong Capricorn types have the innate resource to come up with a plan and to work relentlessly and efficiently on completing it. The question is, are you climbing up a mountain because of wanting social approval? This is why spending time in solitude is essential to Capricorn because he or she must be immune to applause; the only approval the Sea-Goat needs is from within.
Even if you don’t have Capricorn in your chart, you can use this practical, ambitious, and realistic energy to come up with a plan for a goal you would like to accomplish. Before or after you allow yourself to get loose during the holidays, make sure you carve out some time to be by yourself. Solitude can create clarity so you know exactly which mountain you want to climb and how you’re going to ascend.
Mercury Rx
From Dec. 29, 2022 - Jan. 18th, 2023, you’ll want to focus on all things with the prefix “re,” such as reflection, reframing, and revision, to name a few. From Earth’s perspective, the fastest-moving planet seems to be moving backward, and that gives us a clue as to why it’s a great time to go within the mind.
Mercury Rx Dos:
Reflect on your life’s path
Review anything related to communication, media, and traveling
Review important documents
Double-check that email before you send
Stay on top of your travel activities
Have healthy boundaries if past lovers, friends, or family members come back into your life
If you can’t avoid starting or signing anything important during Mercury Rx, just make sure you stay on top of things
It’s good practice to triple-check any important activity during this time
Even though the energy during this time can slow down your progress on a project, life still must move forward. Instead of trying to force things through, capitalize on this energy by reflecting on your life’s path. Are you doing what you want to do? Are your relationships supportive? Is there a pivot you can do to make things run more efficiently? Reflect on how you’re living your life, and if you have an aha moment, then when Mercury goes direct, after Jan. 18th, you can make those adjustments with clarity.
Andre’s Transit of Capricorn Season
There are a handful of aspects going on during Capricorn season, but I want to choose a potentially fun one you can take advantage of. On Dec. 22nd, Venus in Capricorn will be trining Uranus in Taurus. The planet of love and harmony will be in a harmonious relationship with the planet of eccentricity, freedom, and individuality. This will be a good day to do something different and exciting. Switch up your routine and go to a coffee shop, restaurant, or better yet, watch a live music show. You want to be stimulated today, so follow your curiosity.

Capricorn: The Season of Balancing Celebrations and Solitude
This Capricorn season, make sure you spend some quality time alone contemplating 2022, and the challenges and the triumphs that came with it to know how to best move forward in 2023. Only in solitude can we get away from the influence of others’ opinions and have time dedicated to really strategizing what we want to accomplish.
Capricorn values hard work, but remember, it’s also realistic and understanding that letting loose in small doses is healthy for the soul. So make sure you take advantage of Capricorn season by balancing spending quality time alone and also celebrating life, family, and the holidays!

Andre
